HMO Choice

Starting in the Fall of 2009, in most cases, BadgerCare Plus Core Plan  members will get their health care benefits through a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO).

An HMO is a group of doctors, clinics and hospitals that work together to help you manage your health care. Some HMOs are able to provide all of your health care in one location.

As part of your application for the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan, we will ask you to choose a BadgerCare Plus HMO in your area. If you don’t choose an HMO before your enrollment begins, BadgerCare Plus will choose the HMO that will best meet your health needs.

You will be able to choose your HMO online at access.wi.gov or by calling the Enrollment Services Center at 1-800-291-2002. Once your application is approved, you will be enrolled in the HMO that you have chosen. After your enrollment starts, you will have 90 days to change your HMO online at access.wi.gov or by calling the Enrollment Services Center.

When you choose your HMO, keep in mind:

  • All BadgerCare Plus HMOs are required to cover the same basic services under the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan.
  • You will be informed which HMOs will best meet your health needs.
  • If you already have a regular doctor, BadgerCare Plus will let you know which HMOs may have your doctor in their group.
  • If there is only one BadgerCare Plus HMO in your area, you will be enrolled in that HMO.
  • In some cases, you will be able to get your health services from any medical provider that accepts BadgerCare Plus and is taking new patients. This is true for:
    • Tribal members who choose not to enroll in an HMO.
    • Migrant workers.
    • People who live in an area that is not served by an HMO.
